HUDSON HAWK is one of those movies you just have to see to believe … mostly to believe it ever actually happened. It&#39;s like a movie version of Bruce Willis&#39; The Return of Bruno shtick, but without the actor&#39;s natural charisma. It&#39;s an unlikable performance, which is surprising, seeing as he wasn&#39;t yet the complete prick we all know today. The idea of Willis and Danny Aiello timing their cat burglar heist to the length of a song was kind of amusing, but the movie needed more of that jackassery. Instead, there&#39;s a lot of forced comedy, Sandra Bernhard (agh!) and long stretches of ridiculous story that you wish would go somewhere. This movie was already pretty silly while we were still stateside, but once we land in Rome, it all goes whacko. But it&#39;s not the good kind, and this thing was a real chore to sit through.<br/><br/>4/10
Willis is one of my favorite actors, so I just now picked this film up for rental.<br/><br/>I am amazed this has such a low rating, as I liked it quite a bit and thought it quite humorous (though, you have to expect the off-beat pace or you miss the humor at first).<br/><br/>What astounded me is how many cultural references are taken from this film, both in later films and in popular culture, seemingly unwittingly (stuff like the dolphins). Maybe its simply my perception of things, but it appears to me as if this film has been covertly appreciated by those in the film industry, while the &quot;huddled masses&quot; missed the cue to do so.
Boring and banal, overwrought and undercooked, Hudson Hawk is beyond bad. [24 May 1991]
Pick up a copy of co-star <a href="/name/nm0001290/">Richard E. Grant</a>&#39;s book &quot;With Nails: the film diaries of Richard E Grant&quot;. There&#39;s a section about <a href="/name/nm0000246/">Bruce Willis</a> and Hudson Hawk. All British versions are missing a brief close-up scene showing Hawk breaking into a room, probably due to the fear of imitation.
